Originally called Black Lake, Lake Macatawa was settled by Dutch immigrants in 1847. The 1,700-acre lake soon became a prosperous business and residential district thanks to the Chicago yachting crowd that sensed potential at the mouth of the channel.

President Gerald Ford used to spend his summers at the family property here growing up, and Frank Baum took advantage of the serenity of his family's cottage to write his famous novel The Wizard of Oz.
